Dear Joey, by Carolyn Cordon (Unsent Letters Religion Theme)

Dear Joey,

Even if your life isn’t wonderful, act like it is.

I that’s what I think Jesus is telling you, but you aren’t listening.

I know things get you down sometimes, but getting up again can’t happen if you only think about the bad stuff. If you try, at least once, to go out, feel the breeze, look at the sky and think, “This is wonderful–the world we’ve been given,” you’ll begin to believe it.

If you can do that again, the next hour, the next day, the next week, you’ll have a collection of wonderful moments to remember and think about when it’s all looking grey.

I remember you, Joey, when we were eight-year-old kids. I remember how you loved the birds and wanted to fly. I remember the time you jumped off the roof, and didn’t break a single bone. It was wonderful to watch, but scary too. I thought maybe my best friend was mad, wonderful, but mad.

Do you remember that, Joey? You got up, brushed yourself off and looked up to the roof. Then you started to cry and wouldn’t stop. Your body wasn’t hurt. Your mom checked you all over, but you just couldn’t stop crying.

I was scared because you had done such a mad thing and gotten away with it, where I had always been told I’d break a bone if I jumped off the roof. I was scared because you proved my parents wrong, by jumping off and not breaking a bone.

Was that why you cried so much Joey?

I think the reason you were crying was because that was the day you realized you would never be able to fly like a bird. That was the day you stopped thinking your life was wonderful, or could be wonderful.

That was the year we moved away from each other. I wanted to keep believing life was wonderful; you couldn’t see it any more. But Joey, I think it might be time to start acting like life is wonderful. It works for me; it can work for you.

Give it a go, Joey. Next time, act like life is wonderful.

You’re not alone Joey, I’m there for you and so is Jesus.

Your friend,
Carolyn
